Tourism Radio has announced the Gauteng Travel Guide has been rated the top free travel application in South Africa by downloads.
The application, developed by Tourism Radio in conjunction with Gauteng Tourism, is available on the Android and iOS platforms.
“This is the first time a Tourism Radio app has become the number one free travel app in South Africa. The Gauteng Travel Guide has raised the bar for all our future endeavours, due to the relatively short time that it took to achieve this coveted milestone,” Tourism Radio chief executive officer (CEO) and founder Mark Allewell said.
“Tourism Radio looks forward to providing travellers in Gauteng with quality, locally-produced audio and text information on their iPhone and Android mobile devices.”
The travel guide consists of information about the province and more than 350 points of interest. It also has approximately an hour of audio content on popular tourist attractions including museums, nature reserves and art galleries.
CEO of Gauteng Tourism Dawn Robertson was confident the product would succeed and said the world is embracing the mobile gadgets for innovation.
“With 1.08 billion smart phones in use globally, mobile penetration to reach 96 per cent globally by end 2013 and mobile set to overtake fixed Internet access by 2014, mobile cannot be ignored by destinations and travel products as a premium marketing and communications tool,” she said.
