LTA launches IGM project, senator urges authority to steer clear of politics

The Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA) has been advised to remain fair and stay away from politics as it carries out its duties in order to deter prospective investors interested in the sector.

Senator John Ballout, chairman of the Senate Committee on Telecommunications, was speaking at the ribbon cutting of the International Gateway Monitoring (IGM) project in Congo Town, Monrovia.

“When you start to be unfair and political, you start to lose control of the sector,” said Balllout.

According to the senator, the telecoms sector in Liberia is the most reformed “because it is run by very serious people”.

He added the Senate will continually support LTA’s efforts.

Concerning the IGM project, the senator said it is a good initiative that will generate more revenue for the government.

The board chairman of LTA, Commissioner Angelique Weeks, described the IGM as an anti-fraud system that will generate more revenue for the Liberian government.

She added that by the end of the five-year contract, many Liberians will have had training and be fully prepared to take over the IGM system.

Weeks also disclosed that LTA will procure new equipment with which it will improve service quality.

Officially launching the IGM Project, the vice president of Liberia, Joseph Boakai, lauded the LTA for the project that will further improve the nation’s telecoms sector.

He also expressed his optimism that the LTA through the project would be able to exceed its estimated US$7 million annual revenue target.
