Six companies shortlisted for internet project in Malawi

The Malawian government has has shortlisted six IT companies for a public private partnership to provide the country with a fibre cable, making internet connections more affordable.

According to Capital Radio Malawi, the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) and the World Bank are to choose with of the firms will win the contract, which the government says will enable connectivity to both private and public bodies.

It is also aimed at making the internet available and affordable.

The companies include the China International Telecommunication Construction Corporation, American firm GPEC Inc in joint venture with SK Telecom from South Korea, the Malawi Virtual Landing Point Joint Venture Consortium from South Africa, SimbaNET Tanzania Limited, in association with Bharti Airtel, SK Broadband from South Korea and SolitonTelmec Limited, registered in Kenya.

The government has revealed they are currently spending US$36,000 per year on internet connectivity, with the country spending about US$3,000 per megabyte, per second every month to obtain connectivity from international satellites.

“A detailed feasibility study carried out by an independent consulting firm, demonstrated that the transaction as planned by the government was viable from the legal, technical and financial perspectives, and that it would not be bearing any undesirable contingent liabilities resultant from the project”, said a statement.
