Free web and mobile application Efemr has been launched to help Twitter users control their reputation and better protect their privacy through automatic deletion.
The Efemr application takes care of the deletion of Tweets that may be embarrassing or otherwise regrettable through the hashtag feature.
Once the application has been downloaded and granted access to the user’s account, the user is able to set a shelf life expiration on the Tweet.
For example, if a user wishes to have a Tweet deleted within ten minutes of posting, they must type #10m at the end of the Tweet or #1h if the user wishes it to exist for one hour.
The Verge is somewhat doubtful about Efemr because a simple retweet will thwart any attempt at covering one’s tracks.
“SnapChat has shown there’s a demand for this type of erasable social media, though we’re not convinced trying to shoehorn the concept within Twitter is a good strategy…” wrote The Verge’s Chris Welch.
