LG launches first curved TV

LG Electronics has opened a pre-order system for the first ever commercially available curved OLED television, with deliveries to begin next month.

Pre-orders for the 55-inch television are now open in South Korea, with the set priced at KRW15 million (US$13,500).

The screen is the first curved screen to be commercially available and is said to improve viewing quality, with LG claiming the television creates an “”IMAX-like” viewing experience in the home”.

“Our Curved OLED TV is not only the proof of LG’s unmatched leadership in next-generation displays but also a testament to LG’s commitment to bringing to market the most exciting TV technology available today,” said Havis Kwon, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

According to LG, the whole surface of the television screen is equidistant from the viewer’s eyes, removing the possibility of worsening viewing and picture detail towards the edge of the screen, as occurs with flat televisions.

The set is extremely thin, at only 4.3 millimetres, and weighs 17 kilogrammes. A number of colour enhancing technologies have been incorporated into the device’s screen, including a Four Colour Pixel system, and LG’s Colour Refiner.

Rollout plans for other countries will be revealed over the coming months.
