A call has been made for digital content producers in Nigeria to stand firm on the remuneration they receive from network operators which run their products.
Nkiru Asika, chief executive officer (CEO) of Enterprise Creative, was speaking this morning at Mobile Web West Africa 2013 in Lagos.
Asika expressed her dissatisfaction at the ridiculously low remuneration that several operators in Nigeria pay producers for playing their contents, which she said is a breach of contract.
“After playing your songs for like one million times, you will then receive a miserable cheque from the network which is so annoying,” Asika said.
She advised local content producers to come together and take a stand to address this anomaly.
She added the producers should negotiate with the telecommunications companies and other users of their contents and decide the right cost for their services.
According to her, some producers are just happy that a network is using their content and do not even bother to ask for money.
She said such producers ask people around them: “Did you just hear my song on Airtel advert?”
At the morning session, Asika spoke on the theme: “How mobile technologies have taken their place in, and are working alongside, the traditional creative industries: The adoption of the mobile device and the growth of the mobile ecosystem as signaling the expansion of the creative economy.”
