The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) is confident all mobile users will have registered their SIM cards before the July deadline despite around 40 per cent yet to have done so.
Rwanda has little more than six million mobile subscribers and Jean Baptist Mutabazi, the RURA’s head of communications, said around 60 per cent had already completed the registration.
Mutabazi said: “The registration is showing positive progress and we are quite positive about meeting the July deadline. We welcome the job well-done by all the operators so far,” reported The Rwanda Focus.
All members of the East Africa Communication Organization are required to ensure all SIM cards in their country are registered in a bid to tackle mobile fraud.
HumanIPO reported last week Uganda was nearing the completion of its SIM registration.
In Rwanda if users’ SIMs are not registered by July 31 then they will be disconnected.
Mutabazi added: “We will be done by July, and in order not to put too much pressure on the telecoms companies on the last day of registration, we at RURA plan the last road shows in June to call upon the unregistered mobile users to register.”
