Tanzania’s Tigo launches 4G technology

Tigo Tanzania has launched 4G technology, becoming the first telco in the region to allow subscribers to enjoy mobile ultra broadband services.

According to Tigo’s general manager Diego Gutierrez, the rollout of 4G will ensure a better experience for users and is part of the on-going network upgrade programme by the company.

“We recognise our customers’ ever changing demands and need for better, faster and quality internet services and are constantly seeking to provide them with the best user experience in all our products in the most affordable way possible.” Gutierrez told Tanzania Daily News.

Gutierrez added that with the launch Tigo was satisfied it would stay ahead of the competition, with  the super fast internet speeds testament to the company’s pursuit of innovation.

IT specialists, however, have been sceptical on what this launch could mean for Tanzania’s IT infrastructure and data prices.

According to Kay Haruna, an IT specialist, the development will mean changes in telecommunication towers, leading to higher data prices, with the country also lacking enough devices to adequately benefit from the technology.

Another Tanzanian telco, Vodacom Tanzania, launched LTE trials in January, while Smile Telecom last June picked Alcatel Lucent for its 4G network.

Tigo launched the product via Skype, connecting four regions in the country with the happenings as the physical launch took place at the company’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam.
