The MTN Group has launched a country-wide media communication campaign in Myanmar as it looks to inform the country about the benefits it will see if the company is successful in winning its bid for a lucrative mobile licence.
HumanIPO reported last month MTN was on the shortlist of 12 bidders to take one of two telecoms licences in Myanmar and was looking to spend up to US$8 billion on acquisitions.
The company said the intention of the awareness drive was to “demonstrate its credentials as a ‘transformation’ global mobile telecommunications mobile operator worthy of a licence to offer world-class telecoms services to the people of Myanmar”.
“Today, MTN connects nearly 200 million people in 22 countries. Whenever we launch in a new country, we bring with us sustainable, real transformation to that nation, its people and the local economy. We would like to do the same in Myanmar, and are confident of the benefits we would bring,” MTN says in a message published in various newspapers and broadcast on multiple radio stations in Myanmar.
Simphiwe Cele, MTN country representative in Myanmar, said MTN’s had brought benefits to all its markets, has empowering citizens and helping to raise living standards.
“We are proud of this legacy, and we would be honoured to have the unique opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to Myanmar’s socio-economic development,” said Cele.
MTN is currently preparing preparing to submit its formal bid before the June 3 deadline.
