Google has revamped its Maps service for the web, making its maps more detailed and social.
Speaking during the unveiling at the developers conference Google I/O, product management director Bernhard Seefeld described the upgrade as enabling more interaction between the product and users.
“It’s simple and powerful. The map is the user interface,” he said.
Among the features of the new maps include the use of cards, as had been leaked a week ago.
This means that when users click on places the card will show information on those areas, including a navigation feature that can tell users the difference in time taken when driving and using public transport.
Like other social media platforms, Maps now includes a feature which allows users to see reviews on places where friends have visited.
The revamped Maps will not require any additional browser plugins or software similar to Google Earth, and will allow users to see locations from a 3D view.
Users will also be able to upload images to Google Maps and will be required to state the location and add relevant information.
