88mph to host Google I/O day in Kenya

88mph will today screen the Google I/O conference at an event bringing together stakeholders from the ICT sector, media and Google representatives.

The event will be attended by the top Google representatives in the region, including head of Google East Africa Joe Mucheru, and will feature a hackathon with 88mph awarding winners with office space and cash rewards.

There will also be a Google Hangout hosted by online music startup Mdundo, with Kenyan artist Eric Wainaina.

Speakers from HumanIPO, Samsung, the Kenya ICT board, 88mph, Nation Media Group (NMG), the Open Institute and MoVAS group will discuss a wide range of issues including building a sustainable developer ecosystem, startup accelerators and seed programmes, while there will also be a workshop on how to exploit social media and technology reporting.

88mph will also be screening the conference at a similar event in Cape Town.

The event will further be viewable in other African countries, including Tanzania, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Liberia, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt.

The actual I/O has been taking place in the Moscone Center, San Francisco, and yesterday saw the launch of a revamped Google Maps.
