Tanzanian telecommunications service provider Smile has launched 4G services into the market, following in the footsteps of Tigo.
HumanIPO reported earlier this week on Tigo Tanzania’s deployment of 4G in East Africa’s biggest country.
Smile says the introduction of 4G into the market is another major milestone in the region’s development and a culmination of hard work spanning over six months.
Global Smile chief executive officer (CEO) Irene Charnley said users would benefit from increased speeds through enhanced access to advanced communication technology, which will transform their experience.
“4G LTE is making the internet come alive for our customers due to the quality of the user experience. The internet, downloading music and movies without buffering, communicating via HD voice or uninterrupted HD video calling – the internet experience has become better, faster, easier, and more reliable,” Charnley said during the launch in Dar es Salaam.
She added that increased speeds as a result of availability of 4G technology would enable the ICT industry to reach its full potential and boost economic growth.
The successful deployment of 4G, she added, was in line with the objectives behind the formation of Smile, whose vision is to provide high quality and easy to use broadband internet access in Africa.
Smile started extensive testing of 4G deployment in Tanzania in 2012 through a contract with Alcatel Lucent, and says the expansion of the network will be available in other regions later this the year.
