Nintendo to profit from fans’ YouTube videos

Nintendo has confirmed it is to display advertising on videos uploaded by fans to YouTube which feature its games, directly claiming the income.

The firm said in a statement the move was part of an “on-going push to ensure Nintendo content is shared across social media”.

However, some fans have reacted negatively to the announcement, according to the BBC, and pledged to cease playing Nintendo titles and uploading clips.

Nintendo said: “We continually want our fans to enjoy sharing Nintendo content on YouTube.

“That is why, unlike other entertainment companies, we have chosen not to block people using our intellectual property.”

Fan clips posted on YouTube – referred to as “Let’s Play” (LP) – usually demonstrate how to complete sections of certain games or highlights the skills of a certain gamer.

Though the move came in for criticism on social media, the company defended itself, stating only clips showing a certain amount of games footage would be subject to advertising, and that the adverts would appear “at the beginning, next to or at the end of the clips”.
