Zambia to tackle Ghana DTT

Zambia will aid Ghana by investigating its Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) service migration, a government official announced on Thursday.

The race to switch from analogue to digital television in Africa is part of the steps towards digital migration aimed at value improvements for viewers.

Led by Mwansa Kapeya, deputy minister of information and broadcasting service of Zambia, the delegation paid a visit to the Ministry of Communications, National Film and Television Institution in Ghana this week.

Ghana is expected to complete its process of digital migration by the end of December 2013.

HumanIPO reported yesterday on Kagiso Media’s warning South African digital migration will become irrelevant without effective progress.

The country’s determination and involvement of key stakeholders are seen as key elements to reach this goal, despite logistical obstacles, Kapeya said.

The minister told Ghana Business News: “Determination and considerable effort from stakeholders, particularly public-private partnership will help us a lot.”

Impressed with the amount of information readily supplied by Ghana, Kapeya called the decision to assist DTT progress “fantastic”.

He added:  “Indeed the gesture shows that African culture is the same.”

State-owned companies will receive help with digital migration, while private enterprises will have to fend for themselves, Mahama Ayariga, the Ghanaian minister of information and media relations, announced earlier this week.

Zambia is confident of meeting the international deadline of 2015 for completing digital migration.

HumanIPO reported last year on South Africa’s struggle in making progress towards digital migration.
