The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency’s (RURA) latest report indicates half the population of Rwanda now uses mobile phones, attributed to increased telecom competition and use of phones in businesses communications.
Mobile phone subscribers rose from 5,902,630 in January this year to 6,039,615 in March, according to the latest statistics, increasing to 57.3 per cent in March from 53.1 per cent.
“This is mainly attributed to the new mobile telephone subscriptions and the actual population which was found to be less than the projected population,” said RURA.
RURA indicates MTN Rwanda, the country’s largest operator, remained ahead of Tigo with more than 3.4 million subscribers though it lost 2,088 subscribers in the same period.
