A reformed Romanian hacker currently imprisoned after being found in possession of gadgets used in the skimming of ATMs now says he has created a device that could stop the vice.
According to Reuters, the 33-year-old Valentin Boanta, who is serving a five-year sentence, says ATMs have remained vulnerable due to their outdated designs, which have not evolved at the same pace as other security advances in the banking industry.
He now says his Secure Revolve System (SRS) makes ATMs impenetrable for criminals by requiring the bank card to be inserted longer side first and then rotating it to prevent skimmers being able to lock on to the magnetic data strip.
The user receives the card back in the reverse rotation method.
“Every ATM can be penetrated through a skimming crime. My security solution, SRS, makes an ATM unbreachable,” says Valentin.
