Ghana to apply UK address tech

English Intelligent Addressing (IA) for street naming and property addressing in Ghana will form part of a project to improve national security, officials announced at a workshop in Accra this weekend.

The IA system encompasses the use of Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN) and Unique Street Reference Number (USRN) to form part of the national street naming project.

Tony Black, IA consultant, told Ghana News Agency the project will take advantage of the United Kingdom (UK) technology to excel in the provision of location formation and security for both lives and property.

Effectiveness will be enhanced by the establishment of a National Street Gazetteer (NSG) and National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG).

Black praised the IA consultant responsible for the development of the system in England and Wales, managed by GeoPlace through a public sector partnership.

According to him, its superior success and acknowledgement gained in Europe can create “a new standard of currency and completeness for location data,” the Ghana News Agency reported.

Emmanuel Boakye-Danquah, project director and IA consultant, is of opinion the project should be focused on implementing wide access, definitive addressing with a holistic approach.

Countering the challenge of data collection through the IA’s technical experience in information communication and technology, the project will connect all Ghanaian households.

The project launch follows an announcement by President John Dramani Mahama in March 2013, aiming to implement street naming within 18 months.
