The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed the number of mobile subscribers who switched their networks following the launch of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) exceeded 4,000.
The commission’s director of public affairs Tony Ojobo revealed the figure while speaking at an event held in Lagos to celebrate this year’s World Telecom and Information Society Day (WTISD).
Ojobo said the swift embrace of MNP by telecoms subscribers in Nigeria shows they had been awaiting an opportunity to enjoy better services offered by other telecoms companies.
“MNP brings a lot of opportunities for the subscriber and the operator and we are beginning to see these opportunities manifest,” he said.
“Operators are not willing to lose customers who are ready to port to another network at the slightest disservice that they receive from their service providers, and they are doing everything possible to retain customers on their networks, through the rendering of competitive and satisfactory services, as well as the introduction of value added services that will benefit their subscribers.”
He said since the launch of MNP, telecoms companies with poor customer services are being compelled to improve to avoid losing subscribers.
“That is the beauty of MNP, which has put so much power in the hands of the subscribers,” Ojobo said.
