Rwandan telecoms take SIM registration to doorsteps

Operators in Rwanda have launched a house-to-house exercise to allow those unable or unwilling to visit registration centres to register their SIM cards before the July 31 deadline.

The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) says all unregistered SIM cards will be disconnected after July 31.

According to the New Times, telecom service providers are now taking the process to Rwandan doorsteps  to facilitate effective operations.

The exercise is expected to register more than six million SIM cards, with only 3.3 million SIM cards currently registered.

Norman Munyampundu, MTN’s senior customer operations manager, said the process will take place weekly across the nation in order to help the country beat the deadline.

“We are left with only two months to the deadline, but 30 per cent of our subscribers are yet to register. These are our target,” he said.

Munyampundu urged subscribers not to forget to register their fixed lines and modems, saying even those in the diaspora should do so online.

This process is an initiative of the East African Community (EAC) member countries to stop mobile crimes.
