Saudi cleric warns faithful about Twitter

The head of the Saudi religious police has warned citizens about their use of Twitter, saying it was the platform of those that have no platform.

The BBC reports Sheikh Abdul Latif Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh as saying anybody who uses social media “has lost his world and his afterlife”.

The comments echo those of other clerics who have warned that Twitter was a threat to national security, while the grand mufti, the most senior Muslim cleric, has termed Twitter users in the country as “fools”.

The BBC’s Sebastian Usher said it is believed Twitter has seen its fastest uptake globally in Saudi Arabia, though governments in the Arab world particularly view social media with suspicion following the Arab Spring, which was partly influenced by social media.

According to statistics Saudi Arabia has three million Twitter users.
