Liberian minister advises ICT users to be wary of road safety

Liberia’s minister of post and telecommunications Dr Frederick Norkeh has called upon ICT users in the country to desist from inappropriate usage of ICT which could result in road mishap, saying ICT should boost Liberia’s development rather than undermine it.

The minister made this call in Gbarnga Bong County in his remarks at a ceremony organised to mark the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD) and Telecommunications Consumers Parliament Forum.

He also revealed the government’s readiness to improve the living standard of Liberians by enacting ICT-driven policies such as the Agenda for Transformation.

Speaking on the theme “ICTs and improving road safety,” Norkeh said the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is at the forefront of “cutting edge of information and communication technologies, defining and adopting the globally agreed technical standards that have allowed industries to interconnect people and equipment seamlessly around the world”.

In his remarks, chairman of the Senate Committee on Telecommunications, Senator John Ballout of Maryland County, made the case for competition in the nation’s telecoms sector. This according to him will ensure subscribers benefit.

He also implored the various telecoms companies operating in Liberia to improve the quality of services they are offering their subscribers, advising them to intensify their efforts in expanding their network coverage in order to connect Liberians in the rural regions to the rest of the ICT world.
