The Metro Police in Johannesburg says the planned protest for tomorrow against e-tolling by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has not been authorised.
“Permission has not been granted because with the previous motorcade protest, protesters had stopped on the freeway and walked on the freeway, which is a contravention of the National Road Traffic Act,” News24 quoted Wayne Minnaar, chief superintendent, as saying.
Minnaar said to ensure the protest does not occur all law enforcement agencies will be placed on standby.
HumanIPO reported earlier today Dumisani Dakile, Gauteng provincial secretary for COSATU, said COSATU will bring about a total shutdown of Gauteng’s highways during another planned motorcade protest.
Tomorrow’s protest in Johannesburg will affect the N1, N12, M1 and M2 highways.
The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) will reportedly also join the protest march against e-tolling because they believe the tolling will cause an increase in the cost of medicine as well as affect treatment delivery to health facilities.
