Vodacom drops international call rates significantly

Vodacom has launched International Calling Plus, cutting the cost of international calls to 118 countries by 88 per cent.

The new offering allows customers to call abroad from ZAR0.89 (US$0.09) per minute through per second billing.

International Calling Plus will reportedly be made available to the public on Sunday (May 26).

“We tested the waters late last year our ZAR0.89 (US$0.09) calling promotion to 52 countries. It proved so popular that we’ve added three new zones with additional countries priced at ZAR1.19 (US$0.12), ZAR1.79 (US$0.19), ZAR2.89 (US$0.30) respectively and made it a permanent product available to all customers, whether Prepaid, Top-Up or Contract,” said Phil Patel, head of the consumer business unit for Vodacom.

Patel added: “We picked 118 of the most popular calling destinations and reduced the prices where our costs allow us to drop the rates to our customers. The idea is that you should be able to talk to family and friends pretty much everywhere for longer at affordable rates.”

The cost for International Calling Plus is a monthly ZAR5 (US$0.52), and it is accessible through dialling *111#, then selecting the “International Calling Plus” option from the “Buy bundles and services” menu.

Vodacom said the discounted rates apply to both mobile phones and landline phones “in any of the 118 countries, at any time of the day”.

“All customers who signed up for the previous international calling promotion have been informed of the new International Calling Plus offer,” said Vodacom in a statement.
