Internews named finalist in data journalism awards

Kenyan firm Internews’ Data Dredger, which provides journalists with data on health and related topics online, has been named a finalist in the global 2013 Data Journalism awards.

The Data Dredger is the only African finalist in the awards, which recognise outstanding work in the field of data journalism, and will face off against 73 other candidates from 19 countries ranging from major media groups, regional newspapers and research groups.

The portal allows journalists to download compelling visualisations enabling them to better tell stories with data presented in easy-to-use spreadsheets and infographics.

According to the company website the tool solves journalists’ greatest challenges.

“Making numbers tell stories in a compelling way – that’s the challenge for journalists embracing the next big thing in their field: data journalism. Internews’ data portal Data Dredger is just the tool to help overcome this challenge.”

Data Dredger is a product of the Kenya Open Government Data initiative launched in 2011.

Kenyans and Africans in general are now being urged to vote for the tool.
