ICASA’s iBurst interdict extended

The expiration date of the interdict preventing the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) from confiscating iBurst equipment has been extended by a month.

ICASA took down Wired Business Solutions (WBS) radio communication equipment in Gauteng during April, which disabled iBurst and Broadlink connections.

The action was motivated by the regulator’s approach towards outstanding radio frequency licence fees as from October 2012.

iBurst reacted by suing ICASA, after which equipment was been returned with a court interdict set to expire May 25.

The date has now however been extended to June 29, according to an updated court order.

A South Gauteng court order stated: “The interim relief granted in paragraph 2 of the order by Judge Vally on 5 April 2013 is extended and will lapse on 29 June 2013.”

ICASA commented on the court order, saying it “provides a brief description of the proceedings and the time frames for the exchange of pleadings between the parties.”

Further discussions on the matter will continue on May 29.
