Nigeria needs around one million cyber security experts by 2015 to counter incidents of insecurity during online transactions, with the country becoming increasingly dependent on electronic payments.
Tim Akano, the chief executive officer (CEO) of New Horizon Nigeria, told the Daily Trust Nigerians were exposed to cybercrime because of the lack of security experts.
“And as we speak, North Korea can already boast of 15,000 cyber security experts well trained to defend the cyberspace of their country, while China has over 25 million cyber commandos, and if India is targeting five million cyber security experts, I am convinced that Nigeria needs nothing less than one million cyber security experts in the next two years – to cope with the challenges of both cyber terrorism and its twin brother, physical terrorism,” he said.
Akano said sound cyber security measures would reduce incidents of insecurity, with US$1 trillion lost to cybercrime across the world last year, though only US$390 billion was reported.
