Kenya-based East African Data Handlers has unveiled a new application which relays data from a user’s computer to the firm’s centre for backup.
DataHandler enables a continuous backup of files while the device is connected to the web and uses a Java virtual machine to send and receive the data.
“What we shall provide to individuals is software that they shall install to their computer, phone or server that they have and it will automatically do the backup. You don’t have to schedule the backup or remember when to back up.” George Njoroge, chief executive at East African Data Handlers, said, reported Business Daily Africa.
“Data security has increasingly become a major challenge both to individuals and corporate bodies where recovering lost files has been the biggest challenge. The new invention seeks to fix the situation.” he added.
The company seeks to target the growing use of gadgets and computers among young people in Kenya, with the DataHandler application costing an annual fee of KSh1,500 (US$17.50) with no setup cost.
“We lowered our fee to make the service affordable to many people and we don’t intend to increase the cost any time soon,’’ said Mr Njoroge.
The new application comes a year after the company launched a data recovery service primarily focusing on mobile phone subscribers where lost data including call logs and text messages could be retrieved.
Safaricom and Access Kenya currently dominate the backup market.
