Mayowa Owolabi, co-founder of Mobile Monday Nigeria, says the initiative, begun in October 2010, has been recording steady growth and is the nexus for the country’s mobile ecosystem.
Mobile Monday is an open community platform for mobile industry stakeholders and has chapters more than 100 locations around the world. Nigeria’s can be found here.
Concerning the platform’s operations in Nigeria, Owolabi told HumanIPO: “We connect the mobile ecosystem together, from OEMS, developers, MNOs to enthusiasts and the government.”
Presently, he said, meetings are held every last Monday of the month and over the years, it had helped train developers and assisted OEMs in reaching out.
He also noted the numerous achievements and collaborations with major companies including Nokia.
“Last month we had an industry event with Qualcomm and had 30 developers trained early this month by Qualcomm. We helped with the Nokia growth academy in 2011 and helped train over 100 developers,” he said.
According to him, successes of Mobile Monday Nigeria also include the formation of new partnerships and creation of new ventures at its events.
“We’re now partnering with the Lagos state government to start a developer academy,” he said
This is in addition to partnerships with major stakeholders in the Nigerian ICT sector such as inmobi, rancard, vconnect, whogohost, qualcomm, MTN, Nokia and Visafone.
The most recent edition of Mobile Monday Nigeria was held this week and had in attendance several stakeholders who spoke on the theme “big data and its usefulness/benefits to Nigerian companies”.
“It went very well, we had around 60 people in attendance… and Chuka Ofilli of Open Apps, Toba Obaniyi of Whogohost and Laolu Alabi of 47th Avenue come to speak,” Owolabi said.
