COSATU’s “drive-slow” protest against e-tolls goes ahead

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) began their “drive-slow” protest against e-tolling in Johannesburg this morning.

HumanIPO reported last week the Metro Police in Johannesburg said COSATU’s protest against e-tolling planned for May 24 was not authorised due to a magistrates court decision.

The South Gauteng High Court yesterday granted permission to COSATU for today’s protest action on the N12, N3, R24 and R21 freeways on condition the participating motorists adhere to the rules of the road.

The police presence was reportedly heavy in Katlehong, Johannesburg East, this morning to escort COSATU and other protesters.

“We’ll all be out there in full force. The aim is to make sure that everybody is safe,” Eye Witness News quoted Wilfred Kgasago, a member of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police, as saying.

Wayne Duvenage, chairperson of the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA), said: “The judge has ruled in favour of COSATU to be able to express themselves and people can see the impact that freedom of expression has on this emotive topic.”
