NCC remain confident in MNP impact

Nigeria’s mobile number portability (MNP), launched at the end of April, will increase competition and enhance quality of service according to the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC).

Eugene Juwah, executive vice chairman of the NCC, was speaking at the 73rd edition of the Telecoms Consumer Parliament (TCP) at Bridge Waters Hotel, in Nigeria, reported Leadership.

HumanIPO reported last month 4,000 mobile subscribers had ported their numbers to a new network within 48 hours on MNP being launched, but there have also been accusations of some networks stifling the process in a bid to keep customers.

Juwah said: “It will give rise to healthy competition in the industry, enhance quality of service and improve customer service delivery to the consumers.”

Reuben Muoka, head of media and public relations at the NCC, said: “It will deepen competition among operators and improve service quality. It will provide consumers with unfettered choice and remove the trouble of having to move around with multiple cell phones.

“Mobile Number Portability will eliminate the associated cost of updating business contacts, marketing, notifying family members and associates.”
