Ghana is to make the export of copper fibre illegal in response to the cable theft challenges the country faces.

Omane Boamah, minister of communications, announced the anticipated bill during the Vodafone Ghana Limited event held at the Vodafone Network Operations Centre.

The law will act as a reduction strategy to combat the theft of communication cables and improve countrywide communication services.

Increasing complaints filed by citizens regarding the quality of mobile phone calls is one of the main factors behind the decision.

Boamah said cable theft was a major concern to the government.

The Ministry of Communications is planning to launch a 12 month awareness programme to educate Ghanaians regarding the impact of cable theft in collaboration with mobile network companies.

Vodafone Ghana has agreed to partner with the government to promote national ICT.

Since April 2005, Vodafone has experienced a near 400 per cent growth in its subscriber base, from 1.5 to 5.6 million.

The company, however, has also been the victim of cable theft, with 30 incidents last month.

Boamah appealed to mobile communication companies to re-invest profits for ensuring quality service improvement to citizens.
