Huawei and SlumCode to promote knowledge transfer amongst slum youth

Huawei has teamed up with SlumCode Group in Kenya to help emerging entrepreneurs transform their business process through ICT.

As part of the programme Huawei and SlumCode will encourage members to inject technology into their day to day businesses over a period of one year.

The partnership will also empower young people by providing a platform from where they can learn how to use ICT in their businesses, making their products and services more competitive and the business running more efficient.

The beneficiaries are currently underprivileged youth from local universities and business schools, who the company says have shown innovativeness and creativity.

According to Huawei Kenya chief executive officer (CEO) Wind Li, such initiatives will help bridge the digital divide between the academia and industry while promoting local talent.

“We believe in empowering the youth and creating an opportunity for them to grow as individuals and contribute to the development of this country. We acknowledge the steps the government is taking to promote the Kenyan youth through various sectors” said Li.

The youth from SlumCode will also benefit from three month training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship as well as ICT for business, business law and life skills.

The two groups will partner to hold a Grand Slumfest ICT summit where expert speakers will talk to inspire business processes for emerging enterprise in the procurement, human resource, supply chain, research, design and education sectors.

Huawei said it is committed to grow the country’s ICT human capability and has to date trained and given internship opportunity to 130 students in Kenya.
