Kenya’s Ministry of Education is undertaking global enquiries over the best implementation procedure for the government’s project of providing laptops to all Standard One pupils next January, permanent secretary George Godia has said in a statement.
“The Ministry is making wide-ranging consultations ahead of the launch of the Laptops for Primary School programme in January next year,” he said. “The Ministry is exploring the best model for implementation drawing lessons from the best practices globally.”
According to Godia, the government has plans to embrace Information Communication Technology in all areas of education. His ministry hopes to secure convenient devices to provide quality education materials which will enhance digital learning.
The ministry intends to give teachers special training on computer basics in order to equip them with necessary ICT skills required to speed up the new programme, and has also asked the government to ensure all schools have access to power supply and good storage facilities for the gadgets to enable the system to run smoothly.
Godia added that the policy has been designed in a way to combine and coordinate ICT in education and training for the betterment of education services.
“These are the characteristics that produce learners that have the necessary knowledge, skills and behavioural traits that define a healthy and prosperous nation,” he said.
“Once the consultations are finalised we shall inform the public and His Excellency the President will officially launch the programme thereafter.”
