The Right2Know Campaign has organised a march in Cape Town on Wednesday to heighten the pressure on mobile operators to reduce the cost of airtime and data in South Africa.
The march comes on the back of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA) strengthened commitment in the past week to reduce prices, as part of its Cost to Communicate programme.
The march will start at Heerengracht Street, opposite the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), at 9.30am on Wednesday.
In a statement, the group said: “The Right2Know Campaign will be marching in Cape Town to call for free basic and affordable telecommunications. We will hand memorandums to Vodacom, MTN, the independent communications regulator (ICASA) and Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communication to advance our right to communicate.”
Right2Know said universal access to communication improves democracy by enabling people to enjoy access to information and freedom of expression.
