Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal has apologised for incorrectly tweeting a rest-in-peace message to Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first post-apartheid president.
The Telegraph reported on the Spaniard’s initial Tweet, which read: “Today we have lost one of the most important and relevant people in our world. Rest in peace #NelsonMandela.”
The Tweet, which was reportedly retweeted 2,380 times, was subsequently removed by Nadal and replaced with:
Tenía información equivocada y por ahora #NelsonMandela no nos ha dejado. Ojalá este con nosotros mucho tiempo, lo que hizo estará siempre.
— Rafa Nadal (@RafaelNadal) June 10, 2013
Nadals corrected tweet translates to: “My information was incorrect and for now #NelsonMandela has not left us. I hope he is with us for much longer; his actions will be with us forever.”
94-year-old Mandela was admitted to a hospital in Pretoria early on Saturday morning and has been suffering from a recurring lung infection. He is reportedly receiving intensive care.
Doctors maintain Mandela is in a serious yet stable condition.
