Nigerian army chief cautions officers on the use of social media

A top ranking Nigerian army chief has encouraged officers to exercise caution in the way they use social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Major general Chukwuemeka Onwuamaegbu, commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), was speaking while addressing officers from the Directorate of Army Public Relations (DAPR) in Kaduna.

He said if caution is not taken, sensitive information could be indiscriminately shared online, which is one of the shortcomings of the new media.

“In addition to all the benefits we can get from the new media, we also have drawbacks,” Onwuamaegbu said.

“I have personally seen a few posting on Facebook, Twitter by service personnel that should not be there. As officers, we should be able to know the disadvantages of the new media and caution service personnel about some of these postings that shouldn’t be in the cyber space.”

While alluding to the fact that social media is a global trend that Nigeria is part of, he advised army officers to take extra caution in what they post online to guard against causing security breach or interfering with the army’s operational services.
