South African media company Naspers has disbanded its Afrikaans channel Nuus24 after it failed to match the popularity of English version News24.
Although the four-year-old Nuus24 has experienced “excellent engagement” with audience and advertisers, it has failed to match News24.
Jannie Momberg, editor of News24 and Nuus 24, said: “We do still believe Afrikaans speaking consumers need and deserve to get the latest breaking news, information and entertainment on any device.
“We believe that these features and services will be provided by the digital arms of South Africa’s three top Afrikaans newspapers: Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad.”
HumanIPO reported earlier this year on the paywall adoptions of Naspers-owned Afrikaans publications Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad.
Priding itself on the construction of an African digital audience, 24.com said Nuus24 had extended News24 to Afrikaans readers with excellence.
Nuus24.com website visitors will be redirected to an alternative site with the same quality of news as previously enjoyed on the Afrikaans site.
Advertisements will be displayed until June 30, whereafter Ads24 will take over marketing requests.
Momberg thanked readers, clients and agencies for loyal support.
Meanwhile the Afrikaans version of accommodation booking site Travelground, named LekkeSlaap, has been greeted withinstant success and social media popularity.
