Safaricom is installing modems on public service vehicles in Kenya to provide free Wi-Fi services to commuters.
20 matatus (minibus taxis) are already covered, with services to be provided for free for the first month as Safaricom surveys prices drivers would be willing to pay for the service.
HumanIPO reported last month a matatu driver had installed a Wi-Fi network to attract more commuters, providing free internet as well as sockets to charge devices.
Facebook page Team Makmende has listed matatus currently covered by the Wi-Fi from Safaricom, and is urging commuters to vote for other routes to be targeted for Wi-Fi installation.
According to Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) statistics, Safaricom commands 72.6 per cent of mobile data connections in Kenya. In turn, mobile data subscriptions account for 99 per cent of total internet connections in the country as of December 2012.
