Liquid Telecom and its technology partner Ekinops have won a network award for their African fibre link construction at the Global Telecoms Business Innovation awards in London.
The operator received the award for Best Fixed Network Innovation in recognition of the building of what is intended to be the longest single-span fibre links in Africa.
According to Liquid Telecom, the award is viewed as a celebration of the collaborative project with vendors and operators serving the end customers.
Nic Rudnick, chief at Liquid Telecom, said: “At Liquid we firmly believe that we are helping to create Africa’s digital future by investing in technology which is why we choose to build and own our networks wherever possible.”
Rudnick feels as a leading wholesale carrier in Africa, Liquid Telecom has set a standard with its joint project in collaboration with Ekinops.
With a distance of more than 13,000km, the largest African network stretches across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho and South Africa.
Jonathan Amir, vice president of sales at Ekinops, said: “We estimate that Liquid has so far reduced the number of amplification sites from 16 to five, which translates into major cost savings on both Capex and Opex.”
According to Amir, the company plans to enable long-haul networks with ultralong spans.

The operator has also won the Capacity magazine’s Best African Wholesale Carrier in 2012.
