Users whose Yahoo! accounts have been dormant for at least 12 months will lose them to prospective new users who have been given an opportunity to sign up for the “Yahoo! ID they’ve always wanted”.
According to a blog post by the company’s senior vice president for platforms, Jay Rossiter, users will be allowed to apply for the IDs they want by mid-July and in mid-August they will know which one they have received.
“If you’re like me, you want a Yahoo! ID that’s short, sweet, and memorable like [email protected] instead of [email protected],” wrote Rossiter
Yahoo email ID will also give users access tailored content such as “sports scores for your favorite teams, weather in your hometown, and news that matters to you,” added Rossiter.
As the company attracts new users and seeks to retain the active users, the inactive users who still want to keep their accounts have been given a chance to do so.
“All you have to do is log on to any Yahoo! product before July 15th,” Rossiter added.
In future, these accounts will remain active by signing in at least once every 12 months, according to a Yahoo help notice, titled “We want you back”.
Yahoo has been revamping itself through acquisition of new products such as Tumblr and remodeling of others such as Flickr .
It is unclear how many accounts are inactive.
