Google has given ground in the campaign to increase censorship of the internet by donating around US$4.7 million to protection schemes.
HumanIPO reported last month Facebook had admitted it must “do better” with its policies concerning its inability to remove content that promotes sexual violence and was committed to reviewing its policies.
The donation by Google comes ahead of a meeting with the British government tomorrow where they, along with Facebook, are expected to commit to a “zero tolerance” approach to offensive material on the web, reports the Guardian.
One of the groups to benefit from the Google donation will be the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which will use the money to expand its searching team for indecent and illegal images.
Currently Google only blocks websites blacklisted by the IWF.
Funds are also being committed to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, in Virginia, United States and similar organisations in Europe, Australia and Latin America.
