BlackBerry distances itself from US and UK surveillance

BlackBerry has moved to reassure its subscribers there is no “back door pipeline” into its data in response to reports the United Kingdom government had been monitoring communication.

A series of leaks of from United States National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden have revealed the extent of data surveillance of both the UK and US governments across the world.

A series of tech companies, including Yahoo!, Google and Facebook, have moved to distance themselves from cooperating with national security officials, and now BlackBerry has joined the list.

A BlackBerry statement: “While we cannot comment on media reports regarding alleged government surveillance of telecommunications traffic, we remain confident in the superiority of BlackBerry’s mobile security platform for customers.

“Our public statements and principles have long underscored that there is no ‘back door’ pipeline to that platform. Our customers can rest assured that BlackBerry mobile security remains the best available solution to protect their mobile communications.”

A Guardian report of Monday revealed some South African delegates were spied on at the G20 summit in 2009 through email interception.
