The Ghanaian Ministry of Communications has equipped community information centres in eight Ashanti districts with desktop computers and accessories for the improvement of computer literacy.

A total of 180 desktop computers have been dispersed between centres in Adansi North, Afigya-Kwabre, Amansie West, Atwima-Nwabiagya, Kwabre East, Sekyere Central, Sekyere South and Offinso Municipality.

The computers were presented by Edward Omane Boamah, minister of communications, at a ceremonial event in Kumasi.

Boamah also made reference to governmental plans to construct a 780km-long fibre cable to boost the country’s bandwidth capacity and speed.

Valued at EUR37 million (US$49.6 million), the project will be launched with the help of development partners.

Cyber crimes and cable thefts will be dealt with by a Computer Incidence Response Team.

The minister emphasised the government’s determination geared towards ICT investments to achieve global economic competitiveness for Ghana.

As part of the project, a further 400,000 laptops will be distributed to schools and students by 2017.

The computer distribution continues from 160,000 laptops donated between 2009 and 2012 countrywide.

Boamah appealed to institutions to take good care of the equipment.
