Data prices on two of Nigeria’s biggest networks have been slashed as the mobile operators continue to battle for new subscribers in the advent of mobile number portability.

HumanIPO reported yesterday Etisalat Nigeria were claiming to have been the beneficiary from half the number of people who have ported their numbers since the scheme was launched in April, although no official figures have yet been released.

Now MTN Nigeria and Etisalat have both cut their BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) charges by 50 per cent.

The BlackBerry Absolute plan on Etisalat now costs NGN1,500 (US$9.40) per month, with its Blackberry Complete (BBC) package available for NGN1,000 (US$6.30) per month.

The former packages includes 10 free personal email downloads and unlimited data, while the latter includes one free email download unlimited data.

MTN has reduced the cost of its BIS as well as its BlackBerry Quarterly (BBQ) and BBC deals.

They now cost NGN1,500 (US$9.40), NGN4,000 (US$25) and NGN1,000 (US$6.30) respectively,

Rival operators Airtel and Globacom have yet to react to the price changes.
