Banks in Ghana encouraged to take up GhIPSS

Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) has revealed it is further encouraging banks in Ghana to integrate their individual internet portals to the central Clearing House Gateway in a bid to increase efficiency in payments.

Archie Hesse, chief executive officer of GhIPSS, said the initiative will make interbank transfers smoother and faster.

HumanIPO reported last week the German government had granted around US$10.6 million to GhIPSS to give it a further boost after suffering delays since its inception in 2007.

“The move will give meaning to branchless banking and will bring a lot of convenience to bank customers who will no longer need to be physically present at a banking hall in order to transfer money,” Hesse said.

According to him, GhIPSS intends to introduce various opportunities that can significantly improve the national electronic payment infrastructure in order to modernise the systems of payment in Ghana.

When banks in Ghana decide to integrate their internet portals to the clearing gateway, he said the number of customers coming to the banking halls will reduce since more bank customers will embrace internet banking thus easing the pressure on banking staff.

“This could also lead to a drop in cash transactions, as bank customers will be able to effect payment from their computer and mobile phones with internet access,” he added.
