Ghanaian university calls for more online education

A call has been made for the Ghanaian government to cut the cost of operating conventional universities by introducing online campuses.

The president of Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), Dr Osei K. Darkwa, made the plea while presenting certificates to some GTUC lecturers that participated in and completed a two-week training course on online teaching and learning.

According to Darkwa, putting up educational infrastructures such as libraries, lecture halls and hostels is capital-intensive, but with online universities such infrastructure would not be required.

He added that Ghana needs to introduce online education so that those relocating from rural areas to cities can overcome challenges that may make them unable to properly adapt to the demands of the technology-driven modern economy.

“Ghana is lagging behind and we need to leapfrog,” Darkwa said.

He noted that Ghanaian youths are very active on social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook and are using hi-tech devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S4.

He therefore urged the government to intensify efforts so that the West African nation can catch up with the rest of the world.
