Kenya’s cabinet secretary for the Ministry of ICT Fred Matiangi has said bylaws will be introduced to prevent the development of informal settlements within ten kilometres of Konza Tech City.

On a tour of the construction site today, Matiangi said the counties of Makueni, Machakos and Kajiado would see laws introduced to prevent the building of slums, in order to prevent any damage to investor confidence.

“The bylaws are aimed at preventing the proliferation of informal settlements near the 5,000-acre park and set standards which should be adhered to by investors outside the Konza City,” he said.

Phase one of the construction of the 5,000-acre technology city is due to start in December and set for completion in 2017. Matiangi was touring the site along with the governors of the three counties in question.

Alfred Mutua, governor of Machakos, said he agreed with the government’s plans for the areas surrounding Konza, which will also include a two-kilometre park under the control of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

“We are looking to benefit from the project and will put the by-laws in place so that we can have standards,” he said.
