No suspects identified in SAPS hacking case

The South African police appear to be no closer to finding out who hacked the SA Police Service (SAPS) website, with the investigation ongoing.

HumanIPO reported last month the SAPS website had been hacked, which as a result dumped the private details of numerous whistleblowers’ information into the public domain.

Responding to a questions from Freedom Front Plus spokesman Anton Alberts concerning the safety of those people who had had their identities compromised, the police minister Nathi Mthethwa said: “Full implementation of steps will be finalised after the investigation and the threat assessment is completed.”

Although Alberts expressed concern police were not properly protecting those whistleblowers affected, Mthethwa said nobody in the witness protection programme had been compromised.

Lindiwe Sisulu, public service minister, responded to questions put by Alberts in relation to the security measures in place at the time.

Sisulu said there was a firewall and network intrusion protection in place as well as malware inspection and antivirus software.
