Kenya’s cabinet secretary for sports, arts and culture Hassan Wario has urged agencies involved in the film industry to rationalise if they are to create jobs.
Wario was speaking during a tour of the Kenya Film Commission and Department of Film Services offices when he said that through rationalisation of the sector agencies in the country can create 250,000 jobs in the next two years.
Wario added that a film policy will offer a structured engagement with various stakeholders in the sector.
On creating the necessary human resources in the sector, Wario has called for an establishment of a film school, noting there was a serious deficiency of required skills for the industry.
On local content, the minister urged local content creators to take the opportunity provided by digital broadcasting and the increasing need for local talent as he urged the Kenya Film Commission to double its efforts in expanding the sector.
Wario also called on better working relations between government ministries and agencies involved in content creation such as the Kenya Film Commission and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to eliminate the duplication of work.
The sentiments come days after he addressed the Broadcast Film and Music Africa conference in Nairobi, calling for broadcasters to embrace local content over imported soaps as a way of helping the industry grow.
