Prisoners get mobile phones in Liberia

Prisoners at Liberia’s Gbarnga Central Prison in Bong County will now be able to communicate with their families during their jail terms through mobile phones donated by the Rural Human Rights Activists Program (RHRAP).

While handing over the devices to the prison authorities, RHRAP’s acting executive director Sandee Cole Jr said the programme hopes the devices will allow inmates to easily communicate with their friends, families and loved ones while inside.

He added the devices would also bring about quicker justice as the inmates would be able to easily contact their lawyers.

The RHRAP initiative seeks to promote Liberia’s criminal justice system and is supported by the Netherlands-based Inter-Church Cooperation for Development (ICCO).

Established in 1997 by activists focused on educating people in the rural areas on human rights, RHRAP is a peace-building network that is promoting conflict resolution and peace in Liberia.
